Deer Food Plot Tillage: Reasons to Disc Instead of Plow

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Breaking Ground:

There are two basic implements used to break ground. These are the disc and plow. Basically the difference between these two is the result in how the soil is turned in your deer food plot.

Reasons to Disc instead of plow:

1. Low moisture in soil: deeper the tillage the more drying out you get

2. Shallow Top Soil : don’t want to mix great top soil with clay or sand underneath

3. Seeding shallow rooted plants such as clover.

Reasons to Plow:

1. Regular abundant rainfall.

2. Preparing a site that has never been worked or has not recently been worked.

3. Planting deep rooted vegetation.

October 10th, Lucca, Italy

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Today I headed off to Lucca. Now this is a cool place for me. It is a city surrounded by a wall. You can rent bikes to bike around the city, sit in an open patio restaurant and drink while watching people wander by in any of the main squares. It is flatter here, thank goodness. My legs needed a break. It is relatively easy to find your way around town and there is less traffic and people in the streets. I shall stay here a couple of days and it is a short trip by train from here to Pisa for the leaning tower. I will have to fit that in while I am here.
