Aurora australis - Southern polar lights

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Aurora australisThe northern lights southern counterpart is the aurora australis/southern polar lights, which has similar properties, but is only visible from high southern latitudes in Antarctica, South America or Australasia.

Photographic hints for taking pictures: Use a wide-angle lens and a sturdy, well balanced tripod.

Slower films, ASA 100 to 200, capture bright colors but will require longer exposures; the lights will appear smeared. ASA 1000 speed film records clearer shapes, but the colors may not be as vivid and the photos are often grainy.

Shoot at F-2.8 and hold the shutter open for 20 to 30 seconds. The time of the exposure depends on the bright.

Ribbons of light

Monday, December 1st, 2008

In michiganThis was shot in Michigan.

How dramatic is that.

The ribbons of light may shimmer in the sky for minutes to hours, like glowing, dancing sheets of green, yellow and orange or dark red, or even with a variety of colors.

It’s lower edge may have an altitude as low as 60 to 70 miles above the earth.

This is the reason if you are far enough north, you can even hear them.
